Standard on some Generation II models up to serial number OF094774 and early Mercuiser Alpha-I models. To prevent water from getting into the shift cable and universal joint bellows, which can ruin the u-joints and gimbal bearing. The Mercruiser models are compatible with the Sierra 18-2622 Bell Housing Bushing Kit: 23-805041A2, 23-79373A1, 23-45588, GLM 87561, Mallory 9-72161, and Sierra 18-2622.
